Stand Up for Public Education
“Stand Up for Public Education” is a statewide pro-public education campaign that aims to involve and inform our communities about the importance of supporting public education. We want teachers, parents, students, elected officials and community leaders to be a part of education reform.
From Good to Great.
Wonderful things are happening in our public schools every day!
Pioneering Programs: Some of our state’s youngest citizens, 4 and 5 year-olds, started universal pre-k and kindergarten this year, making Oklahoma the best in the nation for early childhood education. For every dollar we invest in early childhood, our return on investment is $13.
Great Teachers: Oklahoma ranks in the top 10 nationally for National Board Certified Teachers. Research shows students taught by these teachers make greater gains. Oklahoma has nearly 3,000 teachers from 76 of our 77 counties.
College-Ready Students: Despite being well below average in education funding, Oklahoma high school students are scoring right at the national average on college entrance exams.
We are headed in the right direction, but it will take all of us to venture into greatness.

At $37,879, Oklahoma was ranked 48th for average teacher salaries in 2005. Many pass judgement quickly after seeing this number. However, education is something that varies with momentum and current salaries are not necessarily an accurate indication of public opinion and support for education. Oklahoma's teacher salary actually jumped up a whopping 8% from the previous year when the average increase in state salaries across the nation was only 2.6%. This type of increase in financial support for teachers is the momentum educators love to see. Momentum like this is an indication the public is beginning to take notice of Oklahoma's education reforms and efforts toward creating a better public education system.
